¤ Extremely rare map of the America's published in Pierre D'Avity's Les Etats... The plate was engraved with figured borders on three sides and is drawn from the Picrt map of 1644, itself derived from the second state of the Janssonius, 1623. The most noticeable difference is the removal of the two skulls below the title cartouche.
Unfortunataly the three figured borders are cut off. P.Burden refers to only one copy and could not identify more examples.
The North Pole illustrate Frobisher's theory of the NORTHWEST PASSAGE and the South Pole shows the long-held idea of the legendary southern continent.
The map is richly decorated with a strapwork title cartouche, fleets of ships and sea monsters. North America retains the peninsular California and the East Coast is beginning to take shape, although it still lacks detail in the mid-Atlantic region.
In South America, there is a large inland sea and two engraved scenes, one of which details a cannibalistic feast. No text on verso. Cartouche signed : Auct: Judoco Hondio. - Burden, North America, 333.

¤ Northwestern North America is virtually empty but with a vague line and a note of Russian sightings in 1743. The American colonies extend westward to the Mississippi and some beyond. The region of Hudson's Bay is very confused, as is Greenland. South America is quite well mapped with many places and tribes names.
