¤ This map of Europe is particularly attractive: finely engraved with discreet decorative sailing ships, monsters and compass roses adorning the seas. In the lower right hand corner of the map a dedication to Simoni Van Hoorn of Amsterdam is shown complete with family arms. Among the many great Dutch map publishers active in the seventeenth century were the Visscher family, begun by Claes Jansz Visscher (1587-1652) and continued by his son Nicolaas (1618-1679), grandson Nicolaas II (1649-1702) and then by his grandson's widow, Elizabeth until her death in 1726. Although mainly art dealers, the Visschers were prolific publishers, producing individual maps and also atlases made up to their customers specifications. They are commonly regarded as second only to the Blaeus among Dutch map-makers for the high quality of engraving and decoration and the geographical accuracy of their many maps.

¤ Very rare Ottoman printed map of Europe from Jedid Atlas Tercü:mesi or New Atlas , printed 1218 H. or 1803 in üsküdar, a part of Istanbul. Title, scale and place names in Ottoman Turkish. Lower right inset of Corsica. The atlas was an annex to a geographical book called Icaletü-Cografya . The author was attached to the Ottoman Embassy in London. The book was written in French by Mahmut Raif Efendi and translated into Ottoman Turkish by Yakovaki Effendi. The atlas is an Ottoman translation of William Faden's atlas. The project was meant to be a prestige project for the Ottoman Palace and it had the seal of approval of the then Sultan-Sultan Selim III. The Plates were made in Vienna, The maps were printed at the Engineer's School Printing Press, which was operating between 1776-1826. The atlas is dated 1803 and only 50 copies were printed.
