24     PTOLEMEE, C. / FRIES, L. Typus orbis descriptione Ptolemaei. Vienne, 1541. Partie inf. gauche légèrement découpée en arrondi, sans atteinte à la carte. - Lower left part slightly cut not affecting the map. Very good condition. 300 x 465 mm.

3000 - 4000 €

¤ Waldseemüller Ptolemaic map of 1513 has been redrawn and reduced in size in this publication by Laurent Fries, geographer and physician. The Vienne edition was printed by G. Treschel. As usual a segment is missing from top right-hand corner of block.
- Shirley, World, 47 IV.

25     MERCATOR, R. Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio. Amsterdam, 1587. Good and dark impression. Without text on the reverse. Minor browning. 290 x 524 mm.

5000 - 6000 €

¤ Separately issued. Gerard Mercator's great world map of 1569 was condensed into double hemispherical form by his son Rumold. It first appeared in 1587 and was incorporated into his long-lived and influential Atlas from 1595 to 1602. A smaller version of Gerard Mercator's (the Elder) large double-hemisphere map, with some changes- it is the original map that was used in the early Mercator's full folio atlases. Without text on the reverse. Mercator was the first to make a distinction between "North America" and "South America". The engraving is a model of clarity and neatness, with typical cursive flourishes to the lettering of the sea names. Surrounding the hemispheres is a strapwork border; between them at the top is an armillary sphere and at the bottom an elaborate compass rose.
- Shirley, World,157.

26     LECLERC, J. Orbis Terrae Novissima Descriptio. Authore Gerardo Mercatore Paris, 1602. Belle impression bien contrastée. - A good and dark impression. 331 x 508 mm.

5500 - 6000 €

¤ Authore Gerardo Mercatore... I. Hondius sculp. I. le Clerc excu. - The map was engraved by Jodocus Hondius for the Parisian publisher Jean le Clerc. The world map is after G. Mercator and is based on the two hemispheres issued by his son in 1587. In the upper corners are circles showing the wind names in Dutch and Italian, the lower corners have circular diagrams containing the phases of the moon and the climatic zones. Copies with the original date of 1602 are rare.
- Shirley, World, 233.

27     SANSON, N. Harmonie ou Correspondance du Globe. Paris, 1659. Limites en col. d'époque. Bel exemplaire. - A good impression. 415 x 545 mm.

400 - 500 €

¤ Gravé par Jean Somer.
- Shirley, World, 233.

28     MARIETTE, P. Mappe-Monde ou carte générale. Paris, 1669. Limites en col. ancien. Slightly age-toned. Two brown spots, repair of split lower part center fold. A good and dark impression. 420 x 560 mm.

900 - 1000 €

¤ World map in double hemispheres without decoration. A revised edition of N.Sanson's world map of 1651. Showing California as an island. To the Asian mainland a peninsula separated from Honshu by the strait of "Zungaar" (Tsugaru). The discoveries of De Vries are incorporated into this peninsula's east coast, and the former "Compagnies Land" is now designated as "Iesso als Ieco". Australia is now more definitely shown, following Blaeu and later Dutch world maps. In the Southern Pacific, part of the coastline of New Zealand has been added, and the northwest coast of North America has also been redrawn. Sanson's map appears to be one of the first to mark "new Denmark" situated to the west of Hudson's Bay, now called "Mer Christiane". The Caspian Sea has also been redrawn more correctly and the rivers flowing out of it delineated.Date changed from 1660 to 1669.
Shirley, World 419

29     VISSCHER, N. Novissima Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula, Auctore Nicolao Visscher. Amsterdam, 1679. Col. ancien. Habiles restaurations notamment dans les marges, pli central consolidé, infimes traces de rousseurs. - Full color., carefully restored at lower part centerfold. Generally in good condition. 430 x 535 mm.

6000 - 7000 €

¤ Superbe et rare mappemonde attribuée à N. Visscher II, ornée de scènes représentant les différents signes du zodiac. - Rare world map showing California as an island. This map may well have been produced by Nicolaas Visscher II. Geographically it is almost identical to the Visscher-Berchem map of 1658, the only difference being the reduced extent of Anian in the smaller north pole projection at the center top. The surrounding decoration is however quite different from Visscher's earlier map. In the corners are vivid scenes showing the various signs of the zodiac accompanied by cherubs and other heavenly figures.
- Shirley, 486.

30     JAILLOT, A.H. Mappe-Monde Geo-Hydrographique, ou description… Paris, 1691. Col. ancien. Sous passe-partout, beau col. d'époque. - Printed from two plates. In very attractive original colours. Some very light offsetting, due to oxidation of green paint. Generally very good. 537 x 892 mm.

2500 - 3000 €

¤ Large-scale world map in two hemispheres prepared by N.Sanson. At the top cherubs with flowing banners are seated astride dolphins and support the arms of France. At the bottom a bold cartouche is flanked by two twin-tailed mermen. A large landmass - Terre de la Compagnie - occupies the north Pacific. California as an island.
- Shirley, World 462, Plate IV, first state.

31     ALLARD, C. Planisphaerium Terrestre Sive Terrarum Orbis.. Amsterdam, 1696. Col. ancien. Dark impression. Each of the four corners underlaid with paper, due to some missing immage, carefully re-drawn. Origin. colour. 520 x 595 mm.

3500 - 4000 €

¤ Decorative double hemisphere map of the world, surrounded by additional hemispheric projections of the world. One of the earliest maps to abandon the baroque style of the 17th Century for a more scientific appearance. Shows California as an Island, incomplete coastlines for Australia and New Zealand, continuous land mass from Asia to the Northwest Coast of America and many other contemporary geographical misconceptions. Allard's innovative style was copied by a number of other mapmakers, including Schenk, Zürner, Homann and Seutter. A visually striking example of this scarce and important map.
- Shirley, World, 578.

32     HOMANN, J.- B. Planiglobii Terrestris Cum Utroq Hemisphaerio.. Nuremberg, 1730. Beau col. Fente le long du pli central, avec petites déchirures. Fente sur 5 cm en bas de carte à l'intérieur de la sphère céleste. Cadre. - Split along center fold and along lower part 5 cm into engraved area, expertly repaired. Framed. 480 x 545 mm.

1500 - 1800 €

¤ Decorative world map surrounded by vivid engravings of natural phenomena such as waterspouts, a rainbow, earthquakes, and a volcano. Windheads occupy the starry heavens, and two cherubs hold the title banner aloft. The map itself shows a typical 18th century geographical view with an incorrect northwest coastline in North America and most of the Pacific incompletely mapped. Nestled between the hemispheres are two lovely, detailed celestial maps.
- Shirley, World, 578.

33     COVENS, J ./ MORTIER, C. Mappemonde a l'usage du Roy Par Guillaume Delisle… Amsterdam, 1740. Traces de pliures, rousseurs. Cadre. - Foxing. Framed. 435 x 685 mm.

- Shirley, World, 578.
