Map of Africa. The cartouche is circular, surrounded by decorative scrolls and surmounted by two satyrs. The beautiful calligraphy is a special feature of Mercator maps. The "projection" associated with Mercator was not used in this particular map. Basically, much the same information is supplied in this map.

¤ A superb image of Alexandria, the famous Egyptian center of learning. From Braun and Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum. Copperplate engraving. The "Civitates" was the first standardized collection of town views/plans and places encompassing the known world at the time. This view first appeared in Volume I, originally published in 1572. The verso is in French. Braun and Hogenberg compiled the famed Civitates Orbis Terrarum in six Volumes from 1572 through 1618. These atlases gained such a high level of popularity that there were numerous reprints in various languages, even before final volumes were published.

¤ Contemporaneous bird's-eye view of the city and surroundings showing the Pyramids and the Sphinx. Egypt had fallen to the Turks during the reign of Selim I at the beginning of the 16th century and this fine rather stylised pictorial plan shows the capital Cairo during early Ottoman rule. Behind a foreground group of travellers and horsemen, the sweeping line of River Nile with the City and its environs beyond. The map includes representations of the famous Pyramids and Sphinx at Gaza to the right, as well as illustrations of crocodiles in the Nile River.

A splendid map of ancient Egypt prepared by R.P.Sicard. Berenice is further south than on previous maps. He tried to make the width of the Nile proportional to its true dimensions; as to Lake Moeris (many assume it to be the Canal de Joseph, but for de Vaugondy it is Birk-el Karoon and Bahr Bellomah west of Memphis.
