¤ During the period 1726-1755, when Johannes van Keulen II was in office as Hydrographer of the V.O.C., the first charts for the navigation to the East Indies and the Malaysian Archipelago were engraved.
In this period van Keulen made to order, usually for wealthy collectors or businessman, separate volumes without text. For Asia they mark the beginning of what was to become the pilot guide for the East Indies. Gradually, when a policy of secrecy was no longer of use because English and French charts of Asian waters had already appeared in print, “The Part VI of the "Zee-Fakkel" was published. (1753).
This unique atlas containing charts pre-dating part VI of the "Zee-Fakkel” and is a unique document relating to the first multinational, made to order for a collector or wealthy business man with an interest in the Dutch East India company (V.O.C.). The atlas contains charts, views and maps of the region ruled by the VOC.
GERARD AND JOHANNES VAN KEULEN MAPMAKERS FOR THE VOC
The atlas was published by Johannes van Keulen II, but many of the charts in this atlas are signed and made by his father Gerard van Keulen.
Gerard van Keulen (active 1704-1726) was appointed as mapmaker for the VOC and WIC in 1714. He immediately produced some very fine charts. One of his finest works is the large scale map of Java after Prof.A.Reland and engraved by J.Keyser. (map 22). His other new charts are : "Steet Sunda" (map 24), "De Reede en stadt Batavia" (map 25) , "Pascaarte van 't Eylandt Ceylon" (map 18) and "Nova tabula Cucan, Canara, Malabaria… & Coromandelia" (map 16).
For the remaining areas Gerard van Keulen acquired copperplates from publishers like Petrus Schenk, Nicolaas Visscher, Gerard Valck, Pierre Mortier, Pieter Goos and others.
This atlas contains a series of charts originally engraved for the most up-to-date maritime atlas for the eastern waters, the: "Suite du Neptune Francois, ou Atlas nouveau des cartes marines", by P.Mortier, Amsterdam 1720.
However G.van Keulen added to the French title and signature of P.Mortier, a title cartouche with a translation in Dutch and his address ; "Syn nu te bekoomen Tot Amsterdam by Gerard van Keulen. Boek en Zee Kaart verkoper aan de Nieuwen Burg.
These maps are marked in our description with an "*". This state is very rare.
Johannes van Keulen II took over the management of the firm after his fathers death in 1726 and was also appointed map maker of the VOC and WIC and spent his first 25 years for mapping the continent of Asia.
THE VOC
At the height of its power and influence in the 17th and 18th century the VOC – acronym for the United Netherlands East India Company – was the greatest commercial concern in the world. The scope of its activities extended from the Cape of Good Hope to Japan.
During the period 1726-1755, when Johannes van Keulen II was in office as Hydrographer of the V.O.C., the first charts for the navigation to the East Indies and the Malaysian Archipelago were engraved.
In this period van Keulen made to order for collectors or wealthy business men with an interest in the V.O.C. separate volumes without text and with the standard general title of the "Zee-Fakkel" (Here he is using the frontispiece of part V). They mark the beginning of what was to become the pilot guide for the East Indies. Gradually, when a policy of secrecy was no longer of use because English and French charts of Asian waters had already appeared in print, in 1753, Johannes van Keulen II issued the entire set, provided with a text by Jan de Marre ; The Part VI of the "Zee-Fakkel" or till than secret atlas.
THE ATLAS
This composite atlas has several charts of great rarity and importance, several pre-dating part VI.
Two large scale continent maps of Africa and Asia by J.Bormeester (583 x 955 mm).
Two charts by G.van Keulen each covering the western or eastern parts of India. They are unrecorded charts displaying mainly the information given on his wall map "Oost Indien. Wassende pasKaart.." taken over from Pieter Goos (1680).
A large map of the island of Java by H.Reland (515 x 1180 mm.). A very rare panoramic view "Aldus verthoont Hem't Casteel Ende de Stadt Batavia... Iaccatra, (1685), 422 x 930 mm, and a spectacular plan ; "Affbeldinge van 't Casteel ende Stadt Batavia... van Iaccatra, (570 x 950 mm.)
Included are 8 views, originally published by Petrus Schenk in his "Hecatompolis", later the copper plates were used by P.Van der AA and finally by van Keulen.
For the remaining areas Gerard van Keulen used copperplates from publishers like Petrus Schenk, Gerard Valck, Pieter van der AA, Hendrick Doncker, Pierre Mortier, J.Bormeester, Joachim Ottens.
THE ATLAS

G.d. Bom. Van Keulen.
