¤ The Chaves map of Florida is a prime example of an explorer's map since it records the recent discoveries of Cabeza de Vaca, De Soto, and Moscoso. The map revealed little information on the interior of North America, but the details presented have been definitely linked with known features. The village of "Aijx" undoubtedly became known to the Spaniards as Ais, and the Mississippi, though distorted, appeared as the "R.de S.Spiritu", the name given to the river by early Spanish explorers. Tascalisa lies on the map as closely as possible to where today's Tuscaloosa, Alabama is. The Chaves map published by Ortelius was, therefore, one of the earliest printed maps of the territory based on actual observations. -Martin & Martin; Maps of Texas and the Southwest. The first printed map of the Florida region. Also on the same sheet are maps of eastern Mexico and of Peru, thus completing the picture of Spain's American possessions. - Cumming, Southeast, p.12,#5; Van den Broecke, Ortelius atlas maps, 15; Burden, North America, 57.

¤ Cummings describes it as "one of the most beautifully executed maps ever made of the Southeast. In detail and in general conception, it surpasses all earlier maps of the region". It was first published in 1606. Hondius drew on various sources for his map: John White's map which was the first to present Virginia on its own; Le Moyne, who drew not only on the information of the French explorers, but also on the Indians which was, at times, notoriously unreliable. He also drew on Ortelius and Wytfliet. This cartographic compromise led to the continuation of some misconceptions: the north western flow of the River May and the placing of a great lake at its source were mistakes that were to last for well over one hundred years. Many European cartographers followed this map, sometimes increasing its errors without adding to its good qualities. Very attractive, from the rare English text edition. Right hand margin reinforced due to some paper loss, else fine. - V.d.Krogt/Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, 9400:1A.

¤ The first map of Virginia to be engraved, printed, and published in the United States is this 1794 map by Samuel Lewis. The Philadelphia publisher Mathew Carey issued the map in Carey's American Atlas and in The General Atlas for Carey's Edition of Guthrie's Geography Improved, each published in 1795. Both printings of the map contain the notice in the lower margin: "Engraved for Carey's American Edition of Guthrie's Geography improved". His American Atlas, containing twenty maps and one chart, is the earliest atlas of the United States. This is the rare first state, dated 1794, the more common second state has the date 1809. Samuel Lewis (ca.1754-1822) was a well-known cartographer who worked independently and occasionally in association with map publishers such as Carey in the United States and Arrowsmith in London. - Stephenson/McKee, Virginia in Maps, pp.56-57, Map II-24.
