¤ Important map of China. Besides China, the map depicts Korea as an elongated island and Japan from the Teixeira model of 1595. Decorated with strapwork cartouches, a European and Chinese ship, a sea-monster and wheeled wind-machines. In one of the cartouches a scene from the a Japanese persecution of a Christian missionary and converts in this period, probably a reference to the martyrdom's in Nagasaki in 1597.

¤ This was the first of Blaeu's maps of China. In 1655 he was to publish the famous map of Father Martini, with many of the earlier inaccuracies present on this map corrected: the outline of Japan was improved and Korea was correctly shown as a peninsula instead of, as here, an island. The map includes an attractive cartouche bottom left with coat of arms and dedication to Theodore Bas, director of the V.O.C. - V.d.Krogt/Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, 2:101.1

¤ An eye-catching chart of Hokkaido and the Islands to the North of Japan. Ships navigate the seas around the Siberian, Chinese and Japanese coast extending as far west as Nova Zembla, the chart continues eastwards to include Xantung province and Korea, mainland Japan and the land mass to the north 'Land van Eso' (Kamchatka). Eastwards the mysterious Compagnies Land is shown. This distinctive chart, from one of the finest chart books of the seventeenth century has a charming cartouche with the title set upon a camel's blanket. Pieter Goos (ca. 1616-1675) was one of the most important cartographer, engraver, publisher and print seller of Amsterdam. His widow continued business at her husband's death. ¤ This was to remain the standard form of Japan until the eighteenth century and although replaced by the maps of Reland and Kaempfer, it is in its outline, closer to the true shape of Japan than either of these or indeed any printed map before the nineteenth century. It was compiled by Father Martino Martini, an Italian Jesuit, and appears in Blaeu's Atlas Sinensis, the first European atlas of China. ¤ The most important influence on European maps of Japan during the early years of the eighteenth century was that of E. Kaempfer based upon the manuscripts compiled during his 2 years residence on Deshima between 1690 and 1692. One of the main points of interest is that the names of the provinces are not given in romanized version as on previous maps but also in Chinese characters. The map includes a dedication to Sir Hans Sloane, in an inset detailed maps of the regions to the north of Japan and a table of distances from Japan to other countries of the world. - Campbell 48; Cortazzi plate 76; OAG 76.
