The map relies largely on the Mercator model, most noticeably with the bulge to the north-west coast of North America. The southern continent PARTIE DE LA TERRE ANTARTIQUVE INCOGNEVE, is full of depictions of native hunting, fishing and socializing. (State 1). Title above the map missing.
The Franciscan friar Andre Thevet (1504-1592) travelled extensively in Europe and made a reputed short journey to South America. Upon his return he records that he sailed along the eastern coast of North America. - Burden, North America, 46, first state

- In 1587, a new plate was engraved which appeared in editions from 1588 onwards. Of the three maps, this one is perhaps the most important. It is the most geographically advanced one, with the bulge in Chile removed, the Salomon Islands inserted and additional names, including C.Mendocino, added to the north west coast. Furthermore, this is the only one of the three plates which is signed by Ortelius as responsible for the preparation of the map.
From a Latin 1595 edition. - Van den Broecke, Ortelius Atlas maps, 11. Burden, America, 64
