Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667), "géographe ordinaire du Roy » d’ Abbeville est considéré comme le fondateur de l’école française de cartographie qui donna à la cartographie française une reconnaissance et renommée internationale malgré la compétition féroce de celle des Hollandais qui maintiendront leur suprématie dans ce domaine jusqu’à la fin du XVIIème.
Le succès de Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667), "géographe ordinaire du Roy” d’Abbeville est du en partie à son étroite collaboration avec Pierre Mariette, père (1602-1658).
En effet, Pierre Mariette père acheta en 1644 la maison d’édition de Melchior II Tavernier (1594-1665), le jeune, et ainsi pu financer la production d’éditions de cartes géographiques de Nicolas Sanson d’Abbeville.
A la mort de son père en 1658, son fils également nommé Pierre, publia l’année suivante (1658-1659) en collaboration avec Nicolas Sanson d’Abbeville "Les Cartes Générales de toutes les provinces de France" dont fait partie celle-ci. Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville (1600-1667), "géographe ordinaire du Roy” from Abbeville is considered to be the founder of the French school of cartography which brought about the rise of French cartography, although the fierce competition of the Dutch would last until the end of the century.
His success was partly owing to the partnership with the publisher Pierre Mariette the Eldeer (1602-1658).
In 1644 the latter had purchased the business of Melchior II the younger Tavernier (1594-1665), and helped Nicolas Sanson with financial support in producing the maps.
In 1658 Pierre Marriette died, however his son, also named Pierre, co-published "Les Cartes Générales de toutes les Provinces de France" the following year (1658-1659).

¤ Fine copper engraved and decorative map of the Provence region in the south of France. It includes the cities of Nimes, Viviers, Avignon, Aix and Nice. The pictorial cartouche features fishermen pulling their nets ashore and women harvesting the fields. Compass rose with fleur-de-lys.
This example is unusual in having the additional separately engraved decorative framework border around the map, the resultant visual effect being particularly striking. The frame border was prepared with a blank centre so that the map could be over-printed on that area.
These separately engraved border frames appear much more uncommon than the standard edition without border frames.

Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795 ) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 he succeeded Jacques Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne’s work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as hand coloring, elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses. While mostly focusing on costal regions, the work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal.

En 1685, Aveline avait obtenu un privilège de dix ans l'autorisant à reproduire l'aspect des Maisons royales.
- Bird's eye-view of the French town of Toulon, including a short key list at the bottom. Engraved by Pierre Aveline (Paris, c.1656 - 23 May 1722).
He was also a print-publisher and print-seller. He probably trained with Adam Pérelle and, like him, specialized in topographical representations. He engraved in suites many views of Paris and of provincial, European and African cities, mixing etching and burin.
In 1685 he obtained a royal license for ten years, authorizing him to reproduce 'le profil des maisons royales'. Among the 412 items that comprise his oeuvre, there are only two portraits and two prints of historical subjects.
The print carries the privilege du Roy .
With the publishers address of Crepy . Etienne Louis Crepy (c.1700-1759) was active as an engraver and publisher active at rue St.Jacques a StPierre in Paris. He was specializing in maps and geographical prints.
In 1731 he acquired the stock of copper plates of topographical content from his father Jean Crepy.

Billmark (along with M. G. Anckarswärd) is the greatest lithographer Sweden has ever possessed.
Carl Johan Billmark arrived in Paris as a young man and lived there for most of his life, working with the best artists and craftsmen of the time. He produced several lithographic albums of high quality, some depicting european sceneries and some sceneries of his native country. He made frequent trips to Sweden to sketch originals. Billmark died during the siege of Paris in 1870.
This plate is uncolored which gives an unique oppurtunity to study Billmaks lithographic skills.
