¤ Ruscelli's mariner's map is a slightly enlarged version of the map which appeared in Gastaldi's edition of Ptolemy thirteen years earlier. The only change seems to be the omissions of the names "Tierra Del Laborador" and "Tierra Del Bacalaos" from the mass of land joining North America to North Europe. The map appeared in 1562, 1564, 1574 and in Giuseppe Rosaccio's expended edition of Girolamo Russelli "Geografia" in 1598 and 1599. This edition from the 1598 edition.

¤ Fine double hemisphere world map. This edition carries the date 1690 changed in manuscript. Nicolas Sanson was to bring about the rise of French cartography, although the fierce competition of the Dutch would last until the end of the century. His success was partly owing to the partnership with the publisher Pierre Mariette. In 1644 the latter had purchased the business of Melchior Tavernier, and helped Sanson with financial support in producing the maps. In 1657 Pierre Marriette died, however his son, also named Pierre, co-published the following years.

¤ The decorative world map was prepared by Hubert Jaillot for his 'Atlas Royal' which was first published by de Fer in 1695. Eight large allegorical figures are shown each with symbols of governance and the arts or against a background representing the four continents. California is shown as an island and "Terre De Iesso ou Ieco" occupies the North Pacific. In the eighteenth century Jaillot's plates came into the hands of the Ottens brothers who published the world map under their imprint. In 1792 there was the final re-issue by J.B.Elwe in Amsterdam. For these issues the title and decoration at the head of the map have been omitted. The rare first edition. - Shirley, World, 561, plate 13.

Cygnus, the Swan, can be seen in the northern hemisphere between June and October. The swan is one of two birds along with Aquila, the Eagle, which are hunted by Hercules. There are a number of possible mythological origins for this constellation. In one version, the swan is the musician Orpheus, who was killed by Achilles at the battle of troy. Upon his death, he was placed among the stars with his harp, Lyra. In another version, the swan was the pet of the Queen, Cassiopeia. - Poggendorff, II, p. 1096: Warner, p. 251.
