¤ Willem Blaeu published this map in 1608 as a wall map with figured borders. When later, in 1630 he needed a general map of the Netherlands for his first atlas, the Appendix, the decoration in the borders was sacrificed: the borders of the copper plates were cut off. One of the most decorative maps of present Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.
Still with the signature of "Willem Janszoon op't Water in de Vergulde Zonnewyzer."

As Willem Blaeu died in 1638 most of his maps are actually published by his son Joan. This maps carries his (engraved) signature and was actually published in volume II of a French edition of his "Le Theatre du Monde ou Nouvel Atlas", dated 1638, therefore published the last year of his life.
From early on Willem Jansz. Blaeu aimed of publishing an atlas to compete with the Hondius-Jansson Atlas. By 1630, he had published at least 17 folio size maps. Blaeu was able to realize his plan soon after he had acquired the copper plates of the atlas maps by Jodocus Hondius. The "Appendix followed in 1630.
In 1635 he finally realized a "international edition" of a world atlas, the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum".
This example is from a very rare 1638 French text edition, which has the same copperplates as the 1635 edition, however the text on the verso was reset in two text columns. This edition is the last version the great master printed under his patronage.

¤ Topographically detailed map of the southern part of the Low Countries that extends from Paris to Metz and north into Holland. Details include roads towns and villages. Two decorative cartouches: one with figures, flags and a lion, and a cartouche with seven scales.
A revised edition, dated 1780.

Philippe Buache de la Neuville was born in Neuville-en-Pont (France) on 7th February 1700 and studied at the Académie des Sciences, where he won the first prize for architecture in 1721.
He subsequently joined the Ministry of the Navy, where his drafting skills enabled him to concentrate on cartography. In 1729 he became geographer to the king, then geographer in the Académie des Sciences, successor to his former teacher and father-in-law, Guillaume Delisle (1675-1726). He pioneered a new form of theoretical geography and, in 1755, was appointed Professor of Geography.
More than a copyist, Buache was an academic geographer who researched his material thoroughly, relying on the most up-to-date information from voyages of discovery. He was the first geographer to recognize the important concept of the watershed and it was this that led him to make a number of deductions, some correct, some not.
Buache was trained under the geographer Guillaume Delisle, whose daughter he married, and whom he succeeded in the Académie des sciences in 1730. Buache was nominated first geographer of the king in 1729. He established the division of the world by seas and river systems. He believed in a southern continent, an hypothesis which was confirmed by later discoveries. In 1754, he published an "Atlas physique."
His nephew, Jean Nicolas Bauche (born La Neuville-au-Pont, 15 February 1741 and died Paris, 21 November 1825), continued his business and was also a geographer of the king.

¤ Showing the Voorhout in The Hague. Likely published by Mondhard, who was a well-known publisher of optical prints, established in rue St.Martin in Paris.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries there were many popular specialty establishments in Paris, Augsburg and London which produced optical viewing devices and special engravings to be viewed through them. In the 18th century the optical print or vue optique came into existence, whose exaggerated converging lines were intended to produce the optical illusion of deep recession. The viewing devices for which these perspective prints were produced consisted of a lens and a mirror, this requiring the use of reversed or mirror-image pictures.
