¤ Ornée d'un cartouche de titre, d'une échelle, d'une rose des vents, de navires et de monstres marins. Le "Theatre geographique de France" de Leclerc est le prolongement du "Theatre" de Bouguereau. Réfugié avec sa famille à Tours pendant les troubles de la Ligue, il aurait alors travaillé chez M. Bouguereau. Ce dernier n'a plus laissé de traces après 1596, mais les planches de son "Theatre" passèrent, dans des circonstances encore inconnues, aux mains de J. Leclerc. - Pastoureau, Leclerc, A (28)

¤ Early imprint of this fine map of south western part of France, engraved by R. Cordier d'Abbauil and dated 1651. Engraved by R.Cordier. Still with the address of Sanson "A Paris, chez l'auteur, rue de l'Arbre sec, près Saint Germain l'Auxerrois, 1651.". Nicolas Sanson was to bring about the rise of French cartography, although the fierce competition of the Dutch would last until the end of the century. His success was partly owing to the partnership with the publisher Pierre Mariette. In 1644 the latter had purchased the business of Melchior Tavernier, and helped Sanson with financial support in producing the maps. In 1657 Pierre Marriette died, however his son, also named Pierre, co-published Les Cartes Générales de toutes les parties du Monde. the following year. It was the first folio French produced world atlas.

¤ A beautiful map showing Ile de Ré in Bretagne, located in the Bay of Biscay off the coast of France, from Vincenzo Coronelli's Corso Geografico Universale. Italian text on verso and a copper engraved panoramic view of "Isola d'Oleron (103x253mm.) and "La cittadella d'Oleron" (133x162mm.) The map is the product of the late 17th century Venetian cartographer, Vincenzo Coronelli. A decorative title cartouche appears bottom left in the form of a banner supported by playful winged mermaids and cherubs. The remarkable Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718), encyclopaedist, geographer, inventor and Doctor of Theology, was citizen of the Republic of Venice. He was also one of the most prominent mapmakers and publishers in Europe of his day.
