  An unrecorded state of this rare and interesting world map, edited by Benito Arias, known as Montanus after his birthplace. This well engraved map appeared in Biblia Sacra, Hebraica... in 1572. The Polyglot Bible with text in Hebrew, Greek, Latin and Syriac was prepared under the patronage of Philip II of Spain and published between 1569 and 1572, with the printing being carried out by Plantin of Antwerp. This map has a unique and famed depiction of an Australian landmass. The only similar printed map with claims to show Australia prior to the Dutch discoveries was a world map by the German theologian, Heinrich Bünting, in his Itinerarium in 1581.
The maps from the first edition, of which the greater number of impressions were lost at sea on route for Spain, have printed on the reverse Orbis Tabula. Ben. Aria Montano. Auctore. 2. VISSCHER, N. Novissima Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula, Auctore Nicolao Visscher. Amsterdam, ca. 1679. 43 x 53,5 cm. Col. Habiles restaurations notamment dans les marges, pli central consolidé, infimes traces de rousseurs.

 Superbe et rare mappemonde attribuée à N. Visscher II, ornée de scènes représentant les différents signes du zodiac.
* Rare world map showing California as an island. This map may well have been produced by Nicolaas Visscher II. Geographically it is almost identical to the Visscher-Berchem map of 1658, the only difference being the reduced extent of Anian in the smaller north pole projection at the center top. The surrounding decoration is however quite different from Visscher's earlier map. In the corners are vivid scenes showing the various signs of the zodiac accompanied by cherubs and other heavenly figures. Full color., carefully restored at lower part centerfold. America became the standard representation of North America for a number of years and was copied by other Dutch and English publishers."The map shows one of the Great Lakes as a large, square-shaped open at its western end. The island of California is delineated in the less commonly seen Briggs shape marked by the flattened northern coast. -Good condition. Full color. Minor restorations at lower centerfold.

# Superbe et rare planisphère célèste par Hardy, connu notamment, pour avoir réalisé une sphère armillaire (1738) ainsi que des globes terrestres et célèstes. La firme fondée par Jacques Hardy, à Paris, fut reprise par le fils, Nicolas Hardy mais après la mort prématurée de celui-ci, son père et sa veuve (remariée à Louis-Charles Desnos) continuèrent la production de l'atelier. Dans les années 1750, Desnos prit la tête de l'atelier qui devint l'une des plus importantes firmes françaises productrices de cartes et de globes.
* The Hardy firm was started by Jacques Hardy, who in 1738 (the date of production of the first globes) lived in the Hotel-Dieu, rue Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre, Paris. When Jacques' son, Nicolas Hardy, married in 1742, he became the owner of the globes, spheres, copper plates, and tools of his father. Nicolas intented to turn the firm into a prousperous business and he might indeed have done so were it not for his early death in 1744. The workshop was then continued by his father and by Nicolas' widow, Marie-Charlotte Loye, who remarried in 1749. Her new husband, Louis-Charles Desnos, took over the Hardy business during the 1750s and turned it into one of the most important French map and globe making enterprises.
