¤ Very rare Ottoman printed map of northern part of Germany, including Hamburg, Bremen, Hannover, etc., from "Jedid Atlas Tercümesi or "New Atlas", printed 1218 H. or 1803 in Üsküdar, a part of Istanbul. Title, scale and place names in Ottoman Turkish. Lower right inset of Corsica. The atlas was an annex to a geographical book called "Icaletü-Cografya". The author was attached to the Ottoman Embassy in London. The book was written in French by Mahmut Raif Efendi and translated into Ottoman Turkish by Yakovaki Effendi. The atlas is an Ottoman translation of William Faden's atlas. The project was meant to be a prestige project for the Ottoman Palace and it had the seal of approval of the then Sultan-Sultan Selim III. The Plates were made in Vienna, The maps were printed at the Engineer's School Printing Press, which was operating between 1776-1826. The atlas is dated 1803 and only 50 copies were printed. We estimate that no more than 20 complete atlases and about 5 incomplete or loose sheets are in existence. A must for the serious collector. - Yazmadan Basmaya: Müteferraki, p.112-118.

Nicolas Sanson was to bring about the rise of French cartography, although the fierce competition of the Dutch would last until the end of the century. His success was partly owing to the partnership with the publisher Pierre Mariette. In 1644 the latter had purchased the business of Melchior Tavernier, and helped Sanson with financial support in producing the maps.
In 1657 Pierre Marriette died, however his son, also named Pierre, co-published "Les Cartes Générales de toutes les parties du Monde." the following year. It was the first folio French produced world atlas.

¤ Impressive view of 3 meters of the town of Lübeck. The lithography was made after a woodbock engraving by Elias Diebel, originally made in 1552. Of the original woodblock print only a 2 examples are known to exsist. The Germanischen National museum in Nürnberg has a coloured example of the first impression, and the British Library has an example of the second imprint of 1574.
John. Geffcken, bought in 1843, from the heritage of senator J.G.Mönckeberg in Hamburg an example of the second edition. In 1855 he asked the Hamburg printer Chr.Fuchs, to produce a lithographic imprint of his copy. In 1881 another reproduction was made by Weigel in Leipzig, this time the print was madeup of 24 woodblock prints.
The example of John. Geffcken was bought in 1870 by the British Library, due to its large format most copies must have lost as they where used as decoration and not bound in a book. The present lithographic imprint of 1855 is very rare, especialy in original gouache colours. The wood block print of 1881 turns up on the marcket once a while.

¤ One of the earliest detailed birds-eye view of Insbrück. The fortified city nestles in the impressive mountainous alpine Inn Valley. In the foreground is a couple in costume whilst a barge is being pulled through the shallow waters of the Inn River. From the greatest publication in this genre!. The "Civitates" was compiled and written by George Braun, Canon of Cologne Cathedral. Braun gathered together vast amounts of information and draft plans to produce over 500 city views/maps published in six parts between 1572 and 1617. Nicolas Sanson was to bring about the rise of French cartography, although the fierce competition of the Dutch would last until the end of the century. His success was partly owing to the partnership with the publisher Pierre Mariette. In 1644 the latter had purchased the business of Melchior Tavernier, and helped Sanson with financial support in producing the maps. In 1657 Pierre Marriette died, however his son, also named Pierre, co-published "Les Cartes Générales de toutes les parties du Monde." the following year. It was the first folio French produced world atlas.
