¤ Map centred on the region between the rivers Seine and Marne, with Paris at the bottom. From the first French-text edition of Jodocus Hondius' Atlas Minor. Shortly after the publication of the big folio-atlases the need was apparently felt for a smaller-sized atlas, one that would be handier and above all, cheaper. The Atlas Minor was larger in format than other small atlases available at the time allowing for significantly greater detail and more place names than found in its rivals.

¤ Fine map of Isle de France, centered on Paris This edition carries the date 1679 and the publishers address "A PARIS chez l'Autheur aux Galleries du Louvre." Nicolas Sanson was to bring about the rise of French cartography, although the fierce competition of the Dutch would last until the end of the century. His success was partly owing to the partnership with the publisher Pierre Mariette. In 1644 the latter had purchased the business of Melchior Tavernier, and helped Sanson with financial support in producing the maps. In 1657 Pierre Marriette died, however his son, also named Pierre, co-published the following years.

¤ A view of the Mount Valerien in the Paris viccinities. Very well engraved with excellent detail. Plan for the Mont Valérien Calvary near Paris. As early as the 15th century, lay people seeking solitary lives of prayer and meditation came to Mont Valérien. In 1554, Guillemette Faussart became the first woman to choose a reclusive life on the hill's summit. Three large crosses, in reference to Golgotha, were erected near her oratory. This is how the hill came to be referred to as "Calvaire Mont Valérien" for more than two centuries. A community of hermits was established on the hill in the late 16th century. These were lay people who took temporary vows, living by their own labour and taking in guests for short retreats. The first Mont Valérien pilgrimage took place in 1634, on the initiative of Hubert Charpentier, a professor of theology and a famous preacher of the time. A monumental stairway took pilgrims along a Way of the Cross consisting of chapels built with funding from prominent members of the court. The chapels featured life sized paintings of scenes of Christ's Passion. People came here to do penance for their sins. From Merian's Topographia Galliae. . . .

¤ Showing the castle of Sant-Germain-en-Laye with its garden. J. Chereau was a publisher of optical prints, established in Paris, rue St.Jacques. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries there were many popular specialty establishments in Paris, Augsburg and London which produced optical viewing devices and special engravings to be viewed through them. In the 18th century the optical print or vue optique came into existence, whose exaggerated converging lines were intended to produce the optical illusion of deep recession. The viewing devices for which these perspective prints were produced consisted of a lens and a mirror, this requiring the use of reversed or mirror-image pictures.

¤ A so called optical print of the King's arrival at Marly castle. When Versailles is transformed to become the main residence for the King and his court, Louis XIV asks Jules-Hardouin Mansart to direct the site of Marly. The works began in 1679 and in 1686 they were well advanced to allow the King to live there. Louis XIV keeps on embellishing the park until his death. The death of the King is the end of the golden age of Marly. The maintenance of the park is too expensive, so it is completely modified during the Regency, and subsequently abandoned during the Revolution to be sold in 1799 to the manufacturer Saignel. He destroyed the castle to sell the building material when ruined in 1806.
