Description

A beautiful hand coloured, hand drawn map of the French Caribbean island of Martinique, prepared for the Buenos Aires 1939 Philatelic Exhibition, with separate text with details of the island in Spanish.
The map renders quite a lot of physical detail, and is surrounded by a lovely leafy, floral border whilst the background is in the French national colours.

Award winning manuscript card, prepared by Antonio Raggio for the 11th Congreso de la Union Postal Universal (World Postal Congress) Exposition Filatelica Internacional, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1939.

The award was given to Raggio by La Sociedad Filatelica Argentina for a collection of maps on cards drawn by Raggio for the event, the majority of which consisted of a map and companion illustrated fact sheet. It would seem that the manuscript cards were likely intended as models for the engraving of stamps.

The Postal Union Congress is the main international meeting of the Universal Postal Union, used to discuss various issues affecting international postal services, such as legislation, the political climate, and other strategic issues.
The first congress was held in Bern, Switzerland in 1874, and was attended by delegates from 22 countries, most of them European. The meetings are normally held every four years, although both World Wars have caused cancellations.
The 11th congress of the World Postal Union (Union Postale Universelle - U.P.U.) was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina 1 April to 23 May 1939. There were 141 delegates, 33 experts and 174 participants from 81 member countries, and 1,108 motions were discussed at the congress.

The value of any rare book, atlas, globe, print, or map is affected by many factors: its rarity, condition, binding, provenance, and the significance of any inscriptions it may contain. Béatrice Loeb-Larcque, an expert and member of the Syndicat Français des Experts Professionnels en Œuvres d'Art et Objets de Collection, provides a free appraisal if you are considering selling. We provide auction estimates based on photographs sent via the Internet. These estimates are not for valuation purposes and are subject to revision upon inspection of the object. It is impossible to provide verbal estimates by telephone, nor can we respond to requests sent without a photo.
There is no easy answer to this question. Some books or maps have, without question, appreciated considerably in value over the years.
Others have remained steadily desirable without seeing a significant rise in price, and still others can be purchased for little money but give great personal satisfaction.
Librairie Loeb-Larocque, with 60 years of experience in the rare map and book trade, can help you decide what kind of collection you would like to build.
