Description

A woodcut print from the Le Charivari. Le Charivari was an illustrated magazine published in Paris, France, from 1832 to 1937. It published caricatures, political cartoons and reviews. After 1835, when the government banned political caricature, Le Charivari began publishing satires of everyday life.
This print depicts a gentleman, with a demure a younger lady, closely inspecting an item for sale at a Parisian exhibition. Beneath the print is some French text: Salesman "We no longer put these instruments in boxes…. We made these elegant cardboard boxes labelled 'Boileau, Lafontaine, etc."
Gentleman "Yes, with such a library one can perfectly see these authors!"
