Description
Fine separately issued example of Gerard De Jode's map of Caenomaniae (Maine Province), from his Speculum Orbis Terrarum. Gérard de Jode (1508? -1590) published in Antwerp in 1578 the Speculum Orbis Terrarum with the hope of making this atlas with 90 maps a competitor to the Theatrum of Abraham Ortelius. However, this last work is popular with the public as evidenced by the many and frequent reissues and as a result, the Speculum does not meet the expected success. Fifteen years passed before the second edition, the title of which was slightly different. Now the atlas consists of 112 maps and the writing was directed by Gérard's son, Corneille (1568-1600). If his epitaph is to be believed, Corneille belongs to this rather rare category of cartographers who have traveled: Norway, Denmark, Iceland and, we are sure, Italy and Spain. But an untimely death robs him of a job rich in promise.
