Description
A scarce broadsheet plan and prospect of Heraklion on one sheet: prospect 180 x 495mm, map 395 x 495mm., in lower part a printed description "Abbildung der starken Stadt CANDIA…".
A fine plan of Heraklion surmounted with a separately-printed prospect of the city.
The Ottomans besieged the Venetian-ruled city from 1648 to 1669, ultimately capturing it. The scene can be dated to 1668, as the ships of the Knights of Malta can be seen fighting in the foreground, while the Turks bombard the city from their land batteries.
The prospect appears to be printed from one of Visscher's plates cut down, losing the key text and the map of the island underneath.
