Description

Very decorative view depicting Istanbul, with merchants in the forground. Features different Mosques and the shores of the Bosporus. Many ships, small and large, are sailing on the Bosporus. In the foreground, some people are loading antique stones on a boat while two men are smoking and a family is waiting to board.

This is a very interesting Neapolitan School work and is displayed within the original wooden frame.

The Neapolitan gouaches aroused the interest of the tourists of the eighteenth and the nineteenth century, eager to return home with pictures and memories of their trip.
The use of gouache allowed a relatively fast production, with a reduced drying time.
This style of applying gouache views remained the prerogative of Naples, one of the most important cities in Europe under the Bourbons and which was obligatorily included in the itinerary of the Grand Tour of Italy, a trip complementary to the studies made by all the distinguished Europeans.
A gouache in this style, quality and size (520x660mm) of Istanbul is quite unusual.

The Librairie was founded in 1958 by Louis Loeb-Larocque. Originally, he arrived in France from Germany shortly after World War II. He started an antiquarian map and book shop in Paris, specializing in early maps, atlases, travel books, and prints. The shop was located at Rue Le Peletier until 1996, and was frequently visited by collectors and fellow dealers from all parts of the world.

At present, the office is located at 31 rue de Tolbiac in Paris in the lively 13th district, a 5-minute walk from the Bibliothéque Nationale de France (Metro Line 14)

Visitors are welcome to our shop by appointment, Monday through Friday.
