Description
First edition. The book is giving a description of the different ship types of all parts of the world from its early times till present (1780). Illustrated with 3 folding engraved plates (c.18x35cm.) by Moitte.
Julien-David Le Roy was the brother of the famous watchmaker Pierre David who built the first marine chrnometer. Architect and member of the "Académie des Inscriptions et Belle-Lettres", he was one of the first to study the ancient maritime history in order to draw lessons applicable to the French Navy of his time.
Based on the authors' study of classical antiquity, he develops a theory of the evolution of ships, "floating bodies, the composition of larger vessels."
