Description

This is the earliest printed representation of India west of the Ganges River in Ptolemy's time. It is an important map of southwestern Asia, including Persia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. The map provides considerable detail of river systems and mountain ranges.
The first issue of this engraving appeared in the 1522 Strasbourg edition of Ptolemy's Geography, followed by subsequent editions in 1525, 1535, and 1541.

The area served many caravan routes in the so-called Silk Road system.

The Silk Route was a major trading pathway through the first millennium B.C. It connected the kingdom of Kamboja, today Afghanistan and Tajikistan, to ancient Pratishthana, Paithan on Godavari towards the south, cities and cultural centers in north India up to Tamralipti or Tamluk on the eastern sea coast. 

 As regards the northern part of India, the north highway known as Uttarapatha in Gangetic Valley connected the great cities of ancient India, which were Taxila, Mathura, Ahichhatra, Sravasti, Saketa, Kausambi, Prayaga, Kasi, Kusinagara, Vaishali, Pataliputra, Rajgreha, Bodhagaya and Tamralipti, etc. The importance of this sub-continental route in the Mauryan period is evident from the fact that Chandragupta Maurya from Magadh is supposed to have reached the Indus River, where he met Seleucus, the Greek envoy, in 305 B.C.

The Librairie was founded in 1958 by Louis Loeb-Larocque. Originally, he arrived in France from Germany shortly after World War II. He started an antiquarian map and book shop in Paris, specializing in early maps, atlases, travel books, and prints. The shop was located at Rue Le Peletier until 1996, and was frequently visited by collectors and fellow dealers from all parts of the world.

At present, the office is located at 31 rue de Tolbiac in Paris in the lively 13th district, a 5-minute walk from the Bibliothéque Nationale de France (Metro Line 14)

Visitors are welcome to our shop by appointment, Monday through Friday.

We provide auction estimates based on photographs sent via the Internet. These estimates are not for valuation purposes and are subject to revision upon inspection of the object. It is impossible to provide verbal estimates by telephone, nor can we respond to requests sent without a photo.
