Description

Premier état de la carte de Provence par Sanson d'Abbeville publiée dans son atlas "Cartes generales de toutes les parties du monde…". Gravée par R. Cordier Abbav.

- First state of this fine map of southern France, including the Provence. It extends along the Mediterranean coast from the mount of River Rhone in the west to "Vinitimille" and the Genovese border in the east. Detail extends northwards to Montelimar.
This edition carries the date 1652, engraved by Robert Cordier.
Nicolas Sanson was to bring about the rise of French cartography, although the fierce competition of the Dutch would last until the end of the century. His success was partly owing to the partnership with the publisher Pierre Mariette. In 1644 the latter had purchased the business of Melchior Tavernier, and helped Sanson with financial support in producing the maps. In 1657 Pierre Marriette died, however his son, also named Pierre, co-published Les Cartes Générales de toutes les parties du Monde. the following year. It was the first folio French produced world atlas.

The Librairie was founded in 1958 by Louis Loeb-Larocque. Originally, he arrived in France from Germany shortly after World War II. He started an antiquarian map and book shop in Paris, specializing in early maps, atlases, travel books, and prints. The shop was located at Rue Le Peletier until 1996, and was frequently visited by collectors and fellow dealers from all parts of the world.

At present, the office is located at 31 rue de Tolbiac in Paris in the lively 13th district, a 5-minute walk from the Bibliothéque Nationale de France (Metro Line 14)

Visitors are welcome to our shop by appointment, Monday through Friday.

It is impossible to provide verbal estimates by telephone, nor can we respond to requests sent without a photo.

Others have remained steadily desirable without seeing a significant rise in price, and still others can be purchased for little money but give great personal satisfaction.
