FIRST EDITION - Fine Turkish Empire map centered on Saudi Arabia, Cyprus and the Mediterranean Sea. Dated 1711, "Sold by John Senex at the Globe aga inst St. Dunstans Church Fleetstreet".
In the first edition, the warrior on the left of the cartouche is a woman (Amazon), while in the second one, maybe some mustaches were added for Puritan requests!

There are excellent details of towns and trade routes in modern-day Uzbekistan. The region here is labeled as "Independent Tartary" or "Usbecs." The important cities of the Silk Road are mentioned: Bokara (Bukhara), Samarcand (Samarkand), Caboul, etc. Trade routes interlink Chiva with Bokara, Astrol, Astracan, etc.
The earliest records of the city of Khiva appear in Muslim travel accounts from the 10th century, although archaeological evidence indicates habitation in the 6th century; by the early 17th century, Khiva had become the capital of the Khanate of Khiva.

Strangely, John Senex's A New General Atlas of the World was the only early 18th-century English attempt at emulating the success of the French and Dutch mapmakers' folio atlases. Other London mapmakers concentrated on very large or very small format atlases, separate issues, or chart books, whereas Senex produced his maps in folio format.
