Description

Full portrait of a man from Christmas Sound, in Tierra del Fuego

This engraved print on laid paper is from "Raccolta di stampe," a series of historically significant eighteenth-century copper plate engravings by Venetian engraver Theodoro Viero (1740-1819). Dating from 1783-90, it is titled in both Italian and French.

The series included people of Central Asia, Asia, Europe, Russia, North Africa, and more distant locations, including Peru and the newly mapped Pacific.
Born in Bassano, Italy, Theodoro Viero studied under Venetian engraver Niccolò Cavalli, before settling in Venice and establishing his business as a miniaturist, burin engraver and print publisher. While publishing many plates by other printmakers, his own output included reproductions of works by Venetian masters, including Canaletto, Tiepolo, and Giovanni Battista Piazzetta.

Produced during the last days of the 1100-year-old independent Venetian Republic (before being conquered by Napoleon in 1797), the presence in this folio of images of the Doge and Dogaressa suggests that "Raccolta di ? stampe" was at least a partial tribute to Venice's rulers, at that time still living symbols of Venetian power and wealth, their palazzo filled with treasures from the farthest corners of the globe.

The value of any rare book, atlas, globe, print, or map is affected by many factors: its rarity, condition, binding, provenance, and the significance of any inscriptions it may contain. Béatrice Loeb-Larcque, an expert and member of the Syndicat Français des Experts Professionnels en Œuvres d'Art et Objets de Collection, provides a free appraisal if you are considering selling. We provide auction estimates based on photographs sent via the Internet. These estimates are not for valuation purposes and are subject to revision upon inspection of the object. It is impossible to provide verbal estimates by telephone, nor can we respond to requests sent without a photo.
There is no easy answer to this question. Some books or maps have, without question, appreciated considerably in value over the years.
Others have remained steadily desirable without seeing a significant rise in price, and still others can be purchased for little money but give great personal satisfaction.
Librairie Loeb-Larocque, with 60 years of experience in the rare map and book trade, can help you decide what kind of collection you would like to build.
