Condition: Printed on thin paper. Good margins. Size of paper 300 x 345mm. Some light marginal water staining affecting the engraved area. Repair of a tear in right hand part of print. Dark impression.

Description

An early town-viewof Isfahan in central Iran,. From the rare first edition "Offt begehrte Beschreibung der newen orientalischen Rejse, so durch Gelegenheit einer Holsteinischen Legation an d. König in Persien geschehen.".

Adam Olearius was a seventeenth-century German scholar who served as secretary to an embassy sent by the small German state of Holstein to explore an overland trade route with Persia. The first embassy was dispatched to Russia in 1633-34 to secure the tsar's permission to travel and ship through his realm.
The second was sent in 1635 to complete the deal with Persia's king (shah). Although the commercial mission failed miserably, the embassy was successful in obtaining an incredible amount of information from Olearius.
After returning to Holstein in 1639, Olearius continued in the Duke's service and published the first edition of his travels in 1647.
In 1656, he released a second, enlarged edition, which became very popular throughout Europe and was translated into Dutch, French, Italian, and English within a few years.

He started an antiquarian map and book shop in Paris, specializing in early maps, atlases, travel books, and prints. The shop was located at Rue Le Peletier until 1996, and was frequently visited by collectors and fellow dealers from all parts of the world.
At present, the office is located at 31 rue de Tolbiac in Paris in the lively 13th district, a 5-minute walk from the Bibliothéque Nationale de France (Metro Line 14).
We welcome visitors to our shop by appointment, Monday through Friday.
