Description

RARE, very early imprint of Gerard De Jode's map of Caenomaniae (Maine (Le Mains - Province), from his Speculum Orbis Terrarum, published in 1593 or earlier.
Gérard de Jode (1508? -1590) published in Antwerp in 1578 the Speculum Orbis Terrarum, hoping to make this atlas with 90 maps a competitor to the Theatrum of Abraham Ortelius.

However, this last work is popular with the public as evidenced by the many and frequent reissues and as a result, the Speculum does not meet the expected success. Fifteen years passed before the second edition, whose title was slightly different.

Now the atlas consists of 112 maps and the writing was directed by Gérard's son, Corneille (1568-1600).
In 1598, the map was replaced by a new map Le Mans. CENOMANO RUM TYPUS [v.d.Krogt 4430:332]. This example has no text on the verso, and strong plate tone is still visible. The laid paper has a watermark of drapes similar to C.M Briquet, Les Filigranes, 13.192. Briquets dates the paper 1580 and traces it to Brabant. The map is signed in the lower right corner by Gerardum de Jode.
The map is printed on thin paper and hastily printed, typically for use in a composite atlas.
The atlas has brown pen-and-ink numbers 50, 51, and, on the verso, 28 and Le Mans.

A SEPARATELY PRINTED EDITION OF THIS STANDARD MAP OF LE MAINS.
