The map includes an attractive cartouche bottom left with coat of arms and dedication to Theodore Bas, director of the V.O.C. - V.d.Krogt/Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, 2:101.1

¤ This was to remain the standard form of Japan until the eighteenth century and although replaced by the maps of Reland and Kaempfer, it is in its outline, closer to the true shape of Japan than either of these or indeed any printed map before the nineteenth century. It was compiled by Father Martino Martini, an Italian Jesuit, and appears in Blaeu's Atlas Sinensis, the first European atlas of China. It is the first map to correctly show Korea as a peninsula. - Campbell 21; Cortazzi, plate 63; OAG 28.

¤ The most important influence on European maps of Japan during the early years of the eighteenth century was that of E. Kaempfer based upon the manuscripts compiled during his 2 years residence on Deshima between 1690 and 1692. One of the main points of interest is that the names of the provinces are not given in romanized version as on previous maps but also in Chinese characters. The map includes a dedication to Sir Hans Sloane, in an inset detailed maps of the regions to the north of Japan and a table of distances from Japan to other countries of the world. - Campbell 48; Cortazzi plate 76; OAG 76.
