¤ Showing California as an island, and above, the north west of the continent left blank except for two legends explaining the discoveries to that date. The Hudson Bay is called Buttons Bay, and the St Lawrence flows from Lake Iroquois, the only Great Lake to be shown.
This important map was the first issued in a Dutch atlas to concentrate solely on North America and show California as an Island. In Nova Anglia three lakes are depicted. Other cartographers of that time followed the older map by Champlain, making this map an important precursor for the mapping of the region. The issue of the map has German text on the reverse.

- Original aquatint engraving for Travels in the Interior of North America between 1832-34 . Engraved by Lucas Weber. The finest work on American Indian life and the American Frontier. The book is the result of an epic journey which took place at a time when the mass migrations of settlers and pioneers was about to alter irrevocably the unspoiled West. Karl Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian to provide a record of his travels among the Plains Indians of North America during 1833-34.
The most important part of their travels started from St Louis, whence they proceeded up the treacherous Missouri along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company.
At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux Tribe, learning and recording their little known ceremonial dances, their powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the 'Yellow Stone' to another steamer the 'Assiniboine', they continued to Fort Clark, studying there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow Tribes, then the Cree and Assiniboine tribes at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company.

¤ Detailed and important early chart of the Gulf Coast and Florida and dated 1800. From Neptune des cotes occidentales d'Amerique sur le Grand Ocean, an extensive atlas of charts of the western coasts of North and South America.
The chart was issued one year after the Spanish Carta Esferica and draws extensively from this map. This landmark mapping of Texas, Florida and the Gulf Coast, is based upon the 1799 Carta Esferica, the first large-scale printed chart of the Texas Coast based upon actual soundings and explorations.
The chart is based in large part on the landmark survey of the coast commissioned by Bernardo de Galvez and conducted by Jose de Evia. The most significant milestone of the survey was the discovery of Galveston Bay in 1785, which had never before appeared on a printed map. Baie de Calvesion (Galveston) is shown on the present map exactly as laid down in the manuscript maps from Evia's Survey.
The coastline configuration in the established the prototype for the mapping of Texas and the U.S. Gulf Coast which would dominated printed maps for the next 2 decades. The map remained as one of the most significant charts of the region for several decades. Both Humboldt and Arrowsmith copied the information set forth in this map for their important maps.
On the map it is noted Grave par E. Collin, et Ecrit par Besancon, Etienne Collin is also noted as being a engraver for 'Depot de la Marine'. It is probable that Collin engraved the map after originals by Besançon. ¤

¤ This splendid map of the southern United States was based on Delisle's influential Carte du Mexique de la Floride.. of 1703. The map is filled with details of early colonial settlements and Indian tribes. The Mississippi is shown too far west of its true course and the Apalachicoli River flows from a large lake in present day Georgia. Details of the Bahamas are included. The Gulf of Mexico is filled with a large cartouche featuring Native Americas and an incongruent lion.
This example is unusual in having the additional separately engraved decorative framework border around the map, the resultant visual effect being particularly striking. The frame border was prepared with a blank centre so that the map could be over-printed on that area.
These separately engraved border frames appear much more uncommon than the standard edition without border frames.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries there were many popular specialty establishments in Paris, Augsburg and London which produced optical viewing devices and special engravings to be viewed through them. In the 18th century the optical print or vue optique came into existence, whose exaggerated converging lines were intended to produce the optical illusion of deep recession. The viewing devices for which these perspective prints were produced consisted of a lens and a mirror, this requiring the use of reversed or mirror-image pictures.

¤ Blaeu based this map on the Mercator-Hondius of 1606. A number of geographical improvements, however were incorporated, although two large fictions lakes accompanied by explanatory legends in Latin, still appear on the map. The British and French royal coats of arms indicate the territorial interests of the two nations at the time. A settlement by Irish planters in 1621 at Newport News in the north, near Chesapeake Bay is shown, and also Jamestown, further instream. The Carolina coast is improved with two large bays. No text on verso. FINE - Cumming 41; Goss, #31.
